Calum Von Moger is an Australian bodybuilder that gained a lot of respect when he openly admitted steroid use. Even though he admits to using steroids, it’s still unclear what his cycle is.
Who Is Calum Von Moger?
Calum von Moger is a 28-year-old bodybuilder from Australia with nearly 3 million likes on Facebook and 2.8 million followers on Instagram. To put things into perspective, that’s more than most Olympia contestants have.
Talking about Mr Olympia, Calum would need to add approximately 65 pounds of muscle if he wants to compete on that stage. However, we will likely never see him on the Olympia stage anyway. The bodybuilder claims to have no interest in the IFBB.
Von Moger was raised together with his five siblings on a farm in Victoria. In 1998, he moved to Geelong, where he started bodybuilding at the age of fourteen.
Next to bodybuilding Calum is interested in “making it big” in Hollywood. In October 2014, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting.
Last year he was cast to play Arnold in the movie Bigger; the motivational story of the founders of bodybuilding as we now know it, Joe and Ben Weider. Facing anti-Semitism and extreme poverty, the siblings defeated all odds to build an empire and motivate coming generations.
You can watch the trailer for Bigger (2018) below:
To me, it comes as no surprise to us that Calum got to play the Austrian legend. Calum is often compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger because he looks like the doppelganger of Arnold in his prime. And as if that wasn’t enough Calum also has Austrian ancestry making him even a better fit to play Arnold.
Just like Arnold Schwarzenegger used to be back in his prime Calum Von Moger is a Mr Universe champion. In 2014 the bodybuilder finished first in the WFF Mr Universe, and in 2015 he finished first in the WFF Pro Mr Universe.
The bodybuilder is known to prefer the classic look over the modern. Therefore, he will likely never compete with the mass monsters on the Mr Olympia stage.
Many bodybuilders are very secretive about their steroid use. Usually, this is due to two reasons: 1. They want to appear natural or 2. They don’t want to promote steroid use.
Appearing natural, or being a so-called “fake natty” is often beneficial for commercial purposes. As you might be aware fitness influencers often have very lucrative sponsorship deals with supplement and apparel brands. Admitting to using steroids may endanger these endorsements.
Von Moger, however, does not have to worry about losing endorsements as he is a fitness entrepreneur who owns his brand of E-books, bodybuilding supplements, and sports apparel. He manufactures his supplements under the name “STAUNCH” and has a wide variety of products including pre-workouts, protein shakes, amino acids and creatine.
Next to using supplements Calum has also admitted to using anabolic steroids to build his physique in his interview with Generation Iron.
You can watch the now legendary interview in the video below:
The Australian bodybuilder told the bodybuilding magazine that he started taking steroids to prepare for his first professional competition, Mr Universe Jr.
He says that without steroids he could’ve never gotten muscular enough to compete in the senior Mr Universe Division like Arnold Schwarzenegger, which was his ultimate goal.
Furthermore, he says that he doesn’t talk about steroids because he doesn’t want to promote their usage
Now, to find out what steroids Calum uses we have to look at the available evidence:
Calum Von Moger is a big guy. Even more impressive than his size is his change. In 2013 the 6″2 bodybuilders weighed a stunning 250 pounds, had 21-inch arms, and sat around 8.6% body fat.
Judging by the picture above he gained approximately 35 lbs of muscle in 5-years, long after he initially started bodybuilding. That’s not possible naturally.
Naturally, men can only gain approximately 40 to 50 pounds of muscle in total. This estimation uses research data collected on ankle and wrist measurements of natural bodybuilders between 1947 to 2009.
Therefore, we think Calum used a bulking steroid like Dianabol to enhance his muscle growth.
Furthermore, when you look at photos of Calum, you’ll notice his insane vascularity. The guy looks like a damn roadmap! His veins pop on his shoulders, chest, arms, and legs. Furthermore, in many pictures Calum his skin appears very red/flushed, especially in the chest area.
This red skin and vascularity effect indicates that Calum von Moger also likely uses cutting steroids.
Cutting steroids often create cause this effect as a result of increased blood pressure; this causes the body temperature to rise and the blood vessels to dilate.
Clenbutrol is a cutting steroid that causes this effect to enhance metabolism, which results in a quicker fat loss.
Unlike most bodybuilders nowadays Calum still has that V-Shape defined by a big chest, broad shoulders and a narrow waist; this is the classic bodybuilding look made famous by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu, and Frank Zane.
Most IFBB bodybuilders nowadays have a thick bloated midsection. The reason many bodybuilders look like this is the use of Groth Hormone and Insulin. I’m pretty sure that Calum doesn’t use these enhancing drugs due to the lack of so-called ‘steroid gut’.
To conclude, I think Calum von Moger used a bulking steroid like Dianabol because of his 35-pound muscle gain years after he initially started training.
Furthermore, I also think he used a cutting steroid like Clenbutrol because of his red skin and insane vascularity.
However, I don’t think he used the popular combination HGH and Insulin, as he shows no signs a bloated gut.
